Located on Tijuana´s most visited avenue (Av. Revolución) the hotel nelson was planned as a five story building. But when it opened for business in 1949 (construction having begun in 1944) only 23 rooms (one floor)of its current 92 were completed.
A second section opened en 1951, and in 1953 the remaining floors entered service.
The building was then the tallest and most impressive in Tijuana.
The Hotel Nelson was also the first to have an elevator, not only in Tijuana but in whole northwest region of México. After 1955, it was one of the first hotels in the region to have telephones in every room. It was also distinguished by the availability of external fire escape stairs for the greater security of its clientele.
Braulio Maldonado, governor of Baja California from 1953-1959 used the hotel as the site for his press conferences.
In the 50s, it was a favorite with such popular Mexican artist as Enrique Guzman, Javier Solis, Marco Antonio Muñiz and Capulina, among others. Famous boxers most prominently Jose ¨mantequilla¨ Nápoles (the best Cuban boxer living in México) also stayed here.
International visitors included Hollywood celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe.
The Hotel Nelson prides itself most of all on having served so many thousand of visitors to Tijuana since its inception. It is pleased that the loyal patronage of so many visitors to Tijuana allows it to continue to offer its services.
